The One Email Every Creator Should Have Running

Someone just signed up for your email list. Maybe they read your blog, heard you on a podcast, or saw your talk. Right now, they’re more interested in you than they’ll be at almost any other moment.

A welcome email meets them there.

What a welcome email is

It’s an email that goes out automatically as soon as someone joins your list. You write it once, turn it on, and it greets every new person for you, whether they sign up at 2 p.m. or 2 a.m.

If you only set up one email, make it this one.

Why it matters

People are paying attention. New subscribers open welcome emails more than almost any other email they get from you.
It delivers what you promised. If someone signed up for a free guide, this is where they get it.
It sets expectations. People who know what’s coming are less likely to forget who you are and unsubscribe later.
It starts a real connection. It’s your first chance to sound like yourself, not a newsletter tool.
Say three things

Keep it short. A welcome email needs three things:

Thank you. They chose to hear from you. Say you’re glad they’re here.
Here’s your free thing. If you offered a guide, a chapter, a checklist, or an episode, link to it right away.
Here’s what I’ll send next. Tell them how often you’ll write and what you’ll write about.
Bonus: ask one question

End with one easy question, such as “What brought you here?” and ask them to hit reply. The answers tell you who your readers are and what they want from you. They also help your future emails reach inboxes instead of spam folders.

An example you can use

Change the words in brackets so it sounds like you.

Subject: Welcome! Here’s your [free guide]

Hi [first name],

Thank you for joining me. I’m really glad you’re here.

Here’s the [guide] you asked for: [link]

[One sentence about why you made it or how it will help.]

Here’s what to expect: I’ll send you [a short email every Tuesday] about [your topic].

One quick question: what brought you here? Hit reply and tell me. I read every answer.

[Your name]

Before you turn it on
Send a test to yourself. Check that the link works and your name looks right.
Read it out loud. If it doesn’t sound like you, change it until it does.
Keep the subject line clear. “Welcome! Here’s your guide” works better than something clever people might skip.
